Review & Description

A fine selection of traditional carols mixed with contemporary takes on the birth of the Christ child, Christmas at the Brooklyn Tabernacle is a festive and joyful celebration of the season. True to their roots, the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir pays homage to their ethnic diversity by including a variety of styles: the funky Caribbean influenced "First Day of the Son," the soulful R&B groove of "They Followed His Star," and the exquisitely executed classicism of "Carol of the Bells." Also included are the popular "Happy Birthday Jesus," performed by the children's choir division, and a magnificently arranged rendition of director Carol Cymbala's "You Shall Call His Name Jesus." Featured soloists include the well-loved voices of Charles Allen, Susan Cymbala, and Karen Melendez. --Paige La Grone Read more

Review & Description

This uplifting story begins on Christmas Eve in New York City as three elderly businessmen prepare to enjoy a festive dinner together. In a show of holiday spirit, they receive visits from two kind-hearted strangers — first a young man, then a young woman. Each has come to return a wallet they believe one of the gentlemen has lost. From this humble beginning, friendships are built, and romance ensues. The elderly gentlemen meet with a tragic mishap in a blizzard, returning to earth as benevolent ghosts who act as the young couple’s guardian angels. Before proceeding to Heaven, the spirits work behind the scenes to ensure that the couple’s love will endure forever. Filled with heart and soul, this charming 1940 holiday classic is perfect for the Christmas season — and beyond. Read more

Review & Description

The singers in the Crouch End Festival Chorus have dipped their vocal chords into both core classical works (Benjamin Britten, Philip Glass) and more pop-oriented projects (Cinema Choral Classics). For better and worse, this disc of Christmas music falls into the latter camp. Here, on 20 tracks, the ensemble, joined by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, performs some of the most popular carols of all time--"It's the Most Wonderful Time of Year," "Winter Wonderland," "Jingle Bells," and more. Conductor Paul Bateman's arrangements don't allow for any choral solos, so each of these works is given largely the same treatment. You get light orchestrations, fine singing, and nice sound to boot. There are technically better CDs of holiday music with better singing and more interesting arrangements, but few are this delightful or infectious. --Jason Verlinde Read more

Review & Description

Frosty the snowman and friends try to teach the townsfolk of Evergreen to believe in magic; After Frosty comes to life due to a magic hat, he must elude the hat's owner and get to a colder climate or melt; Frosty battles an invention that threatens to remove all snow, including him.ove all snow, including him.
Genre: Children's Video
Rating: NR
Release Date: 18-OCT-2005
Media Type: DVDThe classic cartoon of Frosty the Snowman gets a suburban update in The Legend of Frosty the Snowman. Narrated by a folksy-sounding Burt Reynolds (who also sings the Frosty the Snowman holiday jingle), The Legend... takes us to the rigid small town of Evergreen, which looks like a housing development drawn in a 1990s stylization of 1970s architecture. Run by a cheerful fascist of a mayor named Tinkerton, Evergreen is obsessed with rules--and when a talking snowman arrives, he encourages the town's children to step outside of the lines. The school principal, who feels that Tinkerton isn't strict enough, usurps power; after melting Frosty, he turns Evergreen into a brightly colored Orwellian nightmare. Only Tinkerton's son Tommy, who discovers the true story of Frosty in the catacombs of the public library, can save the day. The Legend of Frosty the Snowman paints Frosty as a benign Pied Piper, bringing a vague, soft-edged anarchist impulse to a generically oppressive world. Frosty never had much personality to begin with, but here he barely exists as anything but a symbol of personal freedom. The animation is pleasantly designed and technically proficient, but it's hard to imagine that the bland story will entrance or inspire even young children. --Bret Fetzer Read more
